Solar Flare

After watching Knowing, as I said I started to overthink in the possibility of a big scale Solar Flare and I would have left that aside if I didn't comment it to another person, who told me that a kind of Supernova cannot happen to our Sun, since it doesn't have enough mass and apparently after a small research on the net I found out that he was very right.
Apparently, the sun is flaring all of the time, but not the kind of explossion that could lead to a supernova, so I guess the Knowing film was not considering a Supernova, but some time before our sun become a Giant Red. Don't you think so?
